On the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, a doctor from Kenora is working with NASA on the requirements for long-duration exploration missions.

Dr. Joelle Thorgrimson is this year’s recipient of the Elsie award, which recognizes rising stars in aviation. Thorgrimson is a pilot, physician and physicist who is hoping to become a flight surgeon.

Thorgrimson started her career in the basic sciences with a BScH in astrophysics from Queen’s University, followed by a MSc in quantum computing from McGill University and the National Research Council of Canada. She pivoted her career and studied medicine at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, where she received a MD and the overall award of excellence in her graduating class.

The 2019 gala awards dinner will be held on Saturday, September 28 at the Sheraton Parkway Hotel and Suites Conference Centre in Richmond Hill, Ontario.
