GCHQ is the government agency working to keep the UK safe.

The spy agency works alongside the MI5 and the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to help to counter online and real-world threats from nation states, criminal groups, terrorists, and individuals.

And you could be part of its work because they are currently recruiting.

There are jobs going in London, Cheltenham, Scarborough, Manchester, Bude and Harrogate.

But far from it just being complex roles with lots of experience needed, GCHQ is recruiting apprentices.

Software engineering degree apprenticeship

Manchester: £20,981 (including concessionary payment) and London: £22,677

Job description: “We’re offering a unique opportunity which will lead to an exciting placement within the Intelligence Agencies, you’ll collaborate with colleagues and work in teams to build technology that will help catch criminals, expand and further advance our technical capability, and improve our ability to tackle threats to national security.

“Our work is constantly evolving, and always challenging, giving you new opportunities and challenges to explore, with plenty of support provided throughout.

“Over the course of the three years you’ll enjoy exhilarating, hands-on work to help us build and maintain some of the world’s most sophisticated electronic equipment, all the while working towards a BSc Honours Degree in Digital and Technology Solutions (Software Development).

“You’ll be a vital part of a team that ensures the UK Government can operate in cyber space with confidence and can stay ahead of the pace demanded by the evolving digital world.”

Requirements: “To join this BSc Honours Degree Apprenticeship, starting in September 2020, you will have (or be expecting to have by September 2020), 3 A-Levels – 2 A Levels at grade B or above and 1 A Level at grade C or above. Two of the A levels need to be in either Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM) subjects, or equivalent qualifications in STEM subjects.”

CyberFirst degree apprenticeship in cyber security

Cheltenham, Scarborough, Manchester: £18,920

Job description: “GCHQ’s unique CyberFirst Degree Apprenticeship is a great opportunity to develop advanced cyber security skills, while helping the UK to grow its technical capabilities.

“During the three-year programme, while gaining a recognised university degree, you’ll get exposure to some of the world’s most cutting-edge technologies along with practical insights into the innovative ways we use them to provide cyber security to our customers.”

Requirements: To apply for the CyberFirst Degree Apprenticeship in Cyber Security starting in September 2020, you must:

• Be a UK national

• Have (or be expecting to have by September 2020), a minimum of 2 A Levels at Grade B and 1 A level at grade C or above (112 UCAS points or equivalent)

• Also have an IGCSE/GCSE Maths at grade of B or 5 or above (or equivalent)

Project control officer

Cheltenham: Salary  £28,804 (including concessionary pay)

Job description: “As a PCO, you’ll be required to collate data, identify and analyse problems, draft reports and use logic and persuasion to influence stakeholders. Providing support to the Project Manager and team on governance issues, a consummate communicator you’ll engage with stakeholders and project leads at all levels across the business and will contribute to the continuing development of the Project Management Office (PMO).

“The PMO is evolving to meet our changing business needs, you’ll need to be comfortable with change. Working closely with colleagues you’ll deliver high-value activities to include finance, planning, risks and issues.

“Key aspects of your work include correct adherence to agreed project tools, organising, supporting and co-ordinating key projects and project lifecycle meetings. Providing guidance on PRINCE2 and Agile Methodologies (training will be provided).”

Requirements: “We want an enthusiastic and highly organised individual with a good attention to detail, along with communications skills. You’ll be dealing with large budgets and therefore you’ll need a good understanding of finance as this will play a large part in some of the PCO roles.  Experience of a PMO role would be desirable but it’s more important that you are a team player and comfortable with change.

“PRINCE2 at Foundation/Practitioner level, or experience of Agile methodologies are desirable but not essential, as full training is provided.”

Maths summer school

Cheltenham: £20,536 (pro rata)

Job description: GCHQ is keen to invest in enhancing your talent and maths skills. On our maths summer school placement, you’ll get an insight into how GCHQ uses innovative technologies, and work on projects which are of real, operational interest to our organisation.

The maths summer school placement is a nine-week, paid scheme, for mathematics undergraduates. Working closely with and supported by mentors, you’ll work with other students from the placement to collaboratively conduct innovative research.

You’ll help deliver on projects which will require the application of a variety of different areas of mathematics, and could involve programming high performance computers.  You’ll have a love for solving problems.  In the past these problems have included assessing cryptographic algorithms, analysing complex data sets, developing new statistical tools and researching various areas of maths to ensure that British Government communications are secure.

Requirements: You must be a current undergraduate studying for your first degree (Bachelors, Masters or equivalent) in mathematics, or a Joint Honours subject with mathematics as the main component.   By the start date of the placement, you must have completed a minimum of three taught years of your degree (or equivalent for part-time courses) and should be on track to achieve a 1st Class Honours qualification at the end of your degree.

Advising and consulting on cyber security

Cheltenham, London, Bude, Scarborough, Harrogate: Salary  £26,743 – £33,580 depending on skills, qualification and experience

Job description: “We have a range of roles dedicated to guiding, auditing and facilitating customers and colleagues in managing cyber threats. With an in-depth understanding of cyber security and how platforms, networks and infrastructures are vulnerable, you’ll be the interface between clients and specific expertise. You’ll draw in the right teams at the right time to address issues and solve problems. The area you advise on will likely reflect your skills and experience, which could be in any technology related field.”

Requirements: “We are looking for candidates who have a degree or have relevant work experience.”
