Germany lags far behind other countries for quantum technology – study (via Qpute.com)


Germany lags behind other countries including the US, China, Japan and the UK in terms of research and numbers of patents owned in quantum technology, according to research carried out by the Institute for Innovation and Technology (iit) and published by the Technology Review. 

In total, Germany owns only 2 percent of patents for quantum technology such as quantum computers, communication and sensors, ranking in seventh place. The US rank first with 34 percent, followed by China and Japan with 17 percent, Canada with 9 percent and the UK with 7 percent. 

For quantum computing, Germany owns only 2 percent of the 2,229 patents worldwide, ranking seventh after the US (41%), Canada (17%), Japan (14%), China (9%), Australia (4%) and the UK (3%). 

In terms of publications on quantum computing, only 7 percent out of 35,749 worldwide originate from Germany.
