Wits is hosting a Quantum Computing Summer School this December (via Qpute.com)

Quantum computing is likely a phrase you’ve heard in the past few years but maybe don’t fully understand.

Truth be told the topic of quantum computing is incredible complex and we are not qualified to explain the intricacies and methodologies associated with it.

However, a few organisations that are versed in the quantum computing realm are working together to present a Quantum Computing Summer School which will be hosted at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Together with IBM, the Joburg Centre for Software Engineering (JCSE), Wits Institute of Data Science (WIDS) and the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA), Wits will host the summer school in December.

The course itself will run from 2nd to 10th December at the Wits Science Stadium located at Main Campus West in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

“The aim of the Summer School is in line with the larger goal of Quantum Computing at Wits: to make Africa quantum ready. Attendees will learn how the IBM Q computers operate on a hardware level as well as how to write a program that can exploit the exponential power of quantum mechanics,” reads a statement on the Wits website.

To attend the summer school you will need to have the following prerequisite knowledge:

  • Good mathematical skills including complex linear algebra
  • Understanding of the properties of quantum mechanics including but not limited to superposition, entanglement and interference
  • Some programming experience (Python is prefered)

Of course this course isn’t free but thankfully students get a sizeable discount.

Registration fees for companies and working professionals clock in at R3 000 for the duration of the course. Students and academics can pick up tickets for R750.

Those traveling from afar will be able to make use of student residences nearby for accommodation. Rooms include breakfast and dinner and cost just R50 per night.

On the topic of accommodation if you intend on making use of this offer you have until 15th November to book.

Tickets for the school and accommodation are available through Quicket.

Registration for the Quantum Computing Summer School closes on 22nd November. For those that cannot afford the cost of the school Wits is offering a bursary, details of which can be found on its website.

If this summer school sounds like its up your alley then we recommend visiting the Wits website and registering now.
