False allegations and fake news related to the coronavirus have shaken all industries across the globe. The largest online retailer of the world has faced scrutiny over all the health-related offers on its platform. Amazon.com Inc has banned the sale of more than 1 million products recently. These had inaccurately claimed to defend or cure against the coronavirus.
Amazon also removed thousands of deals from merchants that attempted to price-gouge customers. Italy launched a probe into surging prices online for hygiene masks and sanitizing gels while battling the biggest outbreak in Europe.
Comparison sites showed recent examples of over-priced masks on Amazon made by U.S. industrial conglomerates. Amazon has no place for price gouging, citing the company’s policy that product information needs to be accurate. In the case of inaccuracy, Amazon can take down offers that hurt customer trust, including wrong pricing.
Amazon has declined to specify the exact threshold at which items can be considered unfairly priced. But, it confirmed monitoring for price spikes and false claims through automation tools as well as manual review of listings.
