New data from business networking platform Linkedin has revealed a surge in the number of C-suite executives taking e-learning courses under lockdown.
As the COVID-19 pandemic forces millions around the world to remain indoors, the amount of time C-suite execs in the UK spend on Linkedin learning courses has surged 60% in March and April, compared to the previous two months.
The firm has made a number of its online courses free around the world, including classes on crisis communications, leadership, and influencing.
According to Linkedin’s survey of 1,000 members, 20% were taking classes in order to become “better leaders”, while the other 40% were learning to “succeed at their current job”.
Josh Graff, Linkedin’s UK country manager, said: “Executives today are facing significant operational challenges, while also having to work out how to motivate and mobilise their people – almost all of whom are either adjusting to working from home or working with new social distancing measures.”
He added: “Our data shows that CEOs are taking that challenge very seriously and trying to equip themselves with the right skills to help their companies through these unchartered waters.”
Perlego – an online library startup dubbed the “Spotify of textbooks”– told Business Insider it had seen a 550% increase in usage among C-suite professionals between March and May this year.
They said C-suite execs spend around six hours a month on their platform, and are typically reading four books at once.
Michael Christian, CTO of Claromentis, which offers firms a “digital workplace” intranets, told Business Insider he had taken up a unique combination of online study subjects: the piano and quantum computing.
“Lockdown triggered me to take two online courses, which I wouldn’t have done in normal circumstances,” he said. The piano lessons come courtesy of HDPiano.com, and the quantum computing via online learning marketplace Udemy.
“I played piano and keyboard many years ago and I felt inspired to go back to it and learn a few new songs,” said Christian.
“I’ve wanted to understand the basic principles (of quantum computing), as they are fundamentally different from normal computing and it fascinates me.
“I’m not sure I’ll be able to apply what I’ve learnt yet; it is mostly for my own interest, research purposes, and to sate my curiosity, but it may well be knowledge I need in the future.”
Danny Hall, managing director of marketing agency FSE Digital, told Business Insider he had been taking courses with Google Skillshop to gain a better understanding of the search engine’s power.
“So far I’ve passed the Google Analytics Individual qualification and the Google Search Ads qualification, but really I plan to go through as many of them as possible,” he said.
“I’ve found I’m in a better position to encourage my team to take these courses by taking them myself.”
